Egg traders, were fined Tk 4.5 lakh on account of selling eggs at abnormal price.
Officials from the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection found such unusual selling of eggs in the Ashulia area in the capital on Saturday and took the action.
The dishonest traders began selling of eggs in such unusual extra prices by captivating the consumers.
The office then fined three egg traders Tk four lakh and fifty thousand to stop such dishonest trading.
Abdul Zabbar Mondol, Chief of the National Consumers Rights Protection’s Dhaka office chief and Md. Hasanuzzaman, Assistant Director of the central office conducted the campaign against the unusual price hiking.
Abdul Zabbar Mondol told the journalists that the egg traders did not keep selling receipts.
“They fixed the eggs price as per whims, not following the buying values,” Abdul Zabbar Mondol said.
The officials said that after scrutinizing cash receipts of the traders it has been found that they had bought every piece of egg at Tk 9.40 and sold at Tk 9.60 keeping Tk .20 profit in August 7.
But, they said, after 10 days, the scenario become horrible.
“On August 17, they bought each egg at Tk 9.20 and sold at Tk 11. 80 charging Tk 2.70 atypical profits in per egg,” Abdul Zabbar Mondol said.
“Such dishonest trading created extra burden to the consumers. It is not acceptable and tolerable to the people,” said the official.
The Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection fined SJ agro products with Tk one lakh, Asif egg traders witht Tk one lakh and Faysal Enterprise with Tk 2.50 lakh in the area.
Besides, the office suspended all activities of the Faysal Enterprise for creating volatilities in the egg markets by buying eggs from Kazi Farms by bidding extraordinary price on August 13, hopping extra profits.
The enterprise also failed to show cash memos.
The office asked the owner of the enterprise for physically present in the office on Sunday and show cause that why it not to be tried legally.
