Several hundred students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) continued demonstrations for the third consecutive day on Tuesday to press home their 16-point demands, including infrastructural development of residential halls.
They also hanged lock on the academic buildings and chanted slogans against the BUET administration for the inactive role to implement the demands.
The demonstrators also blocked the road in front of their campus from 10:00am to 11:30am while they showed banners, placards and festoons containing their demands.
Earlier, several hundred students took position at the base of university’s Shaheed Minar to meet their demands.
On Saturday, students submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor and issued an ultimatum to fulfill their demands.
Anis Rahman Mithu, a Coordinator of the movement, said, “We took position at the base of Shaheed Minar at 10:00am in the first two days. Later, some of us went to meet the Vice-Chancellor but could not find him. From there, we went to the dean’s office but we could not meet him either.”
“The BUET authorities are yet to contact us. We will continue our protest tomorrow [Wednesday],” Mithu added.
Their 16 point demands include forming a special committee comprising teachers of Civil Engineering and Architecture Departments to build the BUET gate; organising a competition among students seeking the gate’s design, removing the ‘controversial’ director of Directorate of Student’s Welfare (DSW) post, and appointing someone else to it.
The demands also include introducing teacher evaluation system, name after the female dormitory (hall) after Sabekun Nahar Sony, reintroducing the system of giving double supplementary after acquiring 108 credit, clearing infrastructural development projects which were halted, digitalising students’ payment process and increasing allocation in research sector and introducing code system instead of roll in exams.
