THE UN Refugee Chief registered his deep dissatisfaction and warned all that the world is losing its ability to prevent conflicts which is primarily responsible for adding new faces to the already crowded line of the people who have ‘nowhere to go’. Antonio Guterres, Head of the UN High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR) warned Tuesday that lax ‘effective leadership’ has led to the worst human displacement situation. We are also appalled with this ever-biggest human dislocation, which is gradually becoming a potential threat to the world’s harmony, prosperity and peaceful human existence. Such a quantum leap in forced displacements will only result in unknown challenges. No effective leadership to address the challenges is yet to emerge; rather the most known leaders around the globe cannot but engage in conflicts, occupations and racial slurs. As per the UN Commission, the number of people forced to flee their homes across the world has exceeded 50 million for the first time in the just concluded year 2014 since the Second World War. The host countries and aid agencies have to put up with this exponential refugee rise. UNHCR annual global trends reports last year said, half the world’s refugees are children, many travelling alone or in groups in a desperate quest for sanctuary, and often falling into the clutches of human traffickers. More than 25,000 unaccompanied children lodged asylum applications in 77 countries, a fraction of the number of displaced minors across the globe. The figures of the world’s displaced citizens have mainly been driven by the wars in Middle East Zone viz. Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Turkey, Libya and Egypt. Recently surfaced Islamic State (ISIS) has worsened the situation further by disrupted the lives of people in Arab territories. Conflicts in the Central African Republic and South Sudan also contributed to rising numbers. In South Asia, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Bangladesh are also not free from this man made refugee crisis just like Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.Whatever the origins of conflicts — either due to various reasons like political, ethnic or religion based political imperialism, they must be mitigated in no time to recover the peace which existed before. A world where peace is dangerously in deficit cannot be fit for human living. But unfortunately, the international community has shown very little capacity to do something useful to prevent situations of chaos from emerging and it is only due to inconsistent leadership. More people are being forced to flee than ever before but there must be a humanitarian solution to this problem. This can only be achieved with effective leadership shown by the big powers. Otherwise, the world is being unable to put an end to this nonsense.
