The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Friday held the multiple projects without proper planning responsible for the growing traffic congestions in the capital.
Over the last few days, DNCC Mayor is providing various suggestions and making comments on the traffic gridlocks and expressing desires to work with the traffic management system to ease this situation.
“The traffic congestions in the capital and its surrounding areas have not been created in a day. We have created it. The capital is burdened with the traffic jams for undertaking multiple projects without proper planning,” he said.
Atiqul Islam said this during the 30 years of founding anniversary of Shakti Foundation held at the Justice Shahabuddin Park in Gulshan.
During the function, he pointed out that the pillars of the Metro Rail Project and Elevated Expressway Project are contributing to the traffic jam.
“We have undertaken various projects like metro rail, elevated expressway for easing traffic congestions. But the project pillars along the roads are one of the major causes of traffic
congestions,” he said.
The Mayor underscored the introduction of natural routes especially the river routes for the improvement of the transportation system.
“We have rivers and canals. These routes can be used in the best way for our transportation of goods and people. This can greatly help to reduce the traffic jam,” the Mayor said.
The traffic gridlock has become a nagging issue for the city commuters after the pandemic situation has improved. The educational institutions, offices, business houses are going on in full-fledged.
The city residents begin to experience the traffic jams from morning to late night.
Commuters hold the authorities responsible for the traffic jams, while the authorities say the number of vehicles is more than the road capacity. Besides, the parking lots are almost absent.
The traffic control authority said haphazard parking of vehicles, narrow roads, absence of footpath, and shortage of manpower are responsible for the traffic jams.
Commutes blame that the traffic policemen are not found at the proper locations to handle the traffic system. They are apathetic to the everyday sufferings of the city dwellers. Thus the blame game goes on everyday with the sufferings of the people.
City planners hold the poor traffic management by its authorities like Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Traffic Police and others for the nagging traffic jams. They have observed the big coordination gap responsible for the jams.
They said all the authorities should work in a coordinated way with proper planning to bring discipline in traffic system.
Mayor Atiqul Islam in recent times is repeatedly talking about the discipline of the traffic management. Even his Corporation wants to be a partner of the traffic management to ease the situation, he reiterated.
