THE media has reported that Bangladesh Chhatra League cadres of Rajshahi University unit forced the Masters examination of the Islamic History Department to be postponed. The reason behind the postponement was, as explained by BCL leaders that one of its leaders was unable to attend the exam for health reasons. More than twenty leaders and members of the ruling party’s student wing, led by the RU unit Vice President Rana Chowdhury, went to the department at 9am and locked the examination room just before the start of the exam. The teachers of the department broke the lock and tried to start the exam but the mighty BCL cadres barred most of the examinees from entering the hall. Only a few students managed to enter the hall and were ready to take the exam. Seeing the prospect of “unruly” students desperate to continue what they were originally meant to do at the university i.e. follow the natural course of regular academic activities, the furious BCL boys went on a rampage and vandalised the windows of the hall and the department’s office. When the teachers came forward to settle matters, the BCL men became vocally abusive toward them. An hour later, finally, the authorities postponed the exam. But the nightmare of an already daunting session jam is haunting the students. This is not the first time that exams were postponed. Most public universities could not take the examinations on their scheduled routines simply because of the fact that BCL leaders were not prepared for exams or because some high ups from its rank were not in a mood to sit for an exam. So basically, hundreds of public university students’ futures continue to be hampered by the whims of BCL. Unruly behaviour among the students wing of the ruling party is emblematic of politics of their elders. They have been encouraged to think that might is right and no consideration should be shown to the interest of others. If university level students do not know what is best for them, then we have to worry about the future of this country. We want the teachers and students must develop a relationship of understanding and cooperation for maintaining proper academic atmosphere.
