University is not a grocery store : UGC Chairman

A university can never be a grocery store or garment organization. But, unfortunately, some of the richest people want to make the university as a commercial organization. That’s unexpected.
There are complains about certificate selling against several universities. Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and former Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University Abdul Mannan said that.
Professor Abdul Mannan said, the number of students at university has been increased than ever before. There are a total of 122 public and private universities in the country. And, 30 lakh students are studying in these universities. The number of students is growing constantly.
Anyone can apply for the approval of a university in compliance with the Private University Act-2010. But, the UGC does not approve any of the university immediately.
The UGC sends a report to the Ministry of Education after investigating infrastructure of that university and financial capability etc., if the government wants to find out detailed information about any proposed university.
Abdul Mannan said, the quality of all the currently running private universities is not the same. Many of them have good quality. Private universities began its journey in our country since the year 1992. There is no reason to think that our private universities will be able to keep pace with international standards within the 23 years.
Many universities can meet the basic needs of the students. Again, many do not. We recommend their university to stop, those who do not able to meet the basic needs.
Several universities have been given a deadline until next September to improve the quality. And in the meantime, if they fail, the government will be forced to take extreme action.
However, we cannot tell about the newly applied universities for approval whether they compromise with the quality until they do not start their activities.
We always ask to maintain the quality of private universities.
We have noticed that, many of them have kindness in this regard. Others do not have it. For that reason, other private universities with good reputation have bad effects.
