All sections of people in the Sylhet district area are united against militancy.
The situation in the Sylhet area has changed following the dreadful militant attacks at Gulshan and Sholakia, that took place in the wake of a series of targeted killings.
The spread of militancy and side by side involvement of children of rich families and students of higher educational institutions have made all worried. There is fear in public minds of fresh attacks as a good number of youths reportedly went missing and joined militant activities.
As the eyes of international militant organisations are fixed on Bangladesh, the members of the law enforcement agencies are trying to find out their involvement and the roots of the extremists inside the country.
Students, teachers, cultural activists as well as alems-ulemas and different religious organisations in Sylhet area have already come out on the streets to combat militancy. People belonging to different classes and professions are also vocal against militant activities. Although there is no understanding among the political parties on the issue, solid unity has developed against militancy among the people from the different kinds of people in Sylhet district and 13 upazilas.
The indication of all-out resistance against the militancy in the district area has already been visible and multi-prong activities have started. Leaders and activists of political parties as well as social, cultural and professional organisations are out in the field with programmes. Everyday, different anti-militancy programmes, meetings, rallies, seminars and human chains are being held. People are joining spontaneously in these programmes of socio-cultural resistance and call for national unity.
The education ministry has also moved about as a section of the students of major educational institutions joined militant activities. Motivational programmes aimed at bringing back the derailed students to normal life are being undertaken. Special instructions are being sent to all kinds of educational institutions including higher educational institutions, schools, colleges and madrasas. Views exchange meetings and rallies with the authorities of those institutions are being arranged.
Meetings are being held separately with those associated to private universities, English medium schools, public universities, government and private colleges under National University and madrasas. The opinions of all are being gathered. On completion of these series view exchange meetings, integrated directives will be issued.
Vigilance on educational institutions has already been enhanced. Under the instructions of the authorities, resistance committees comprising students and teachers have been formed. Rallies and human chain programmes against militancy are being organised.
The Chairman of UGC has announced human chain programmes in all universities of the country on August 1 marking completion of one month of the Gulshan café attack.
The freedom fighters in Sylhet also have vowed to combat the militancy.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) brought out an anti-militancy rally on its campus Thursday.
The rally which started in front of the administrative building was attended by Sust Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.
“Bangladesh is a secular country and there is no room for militants, said the VC.
The university staff, teachers and students also took part in the rally that marched through the campus.
North East University, Bangladesh arranged an anti-militancy meeting on its campus on Thursday.
The meeting which started in front of the administrative building was attended by its Vice-Chancellor Khalilur Rahman.
BSS fromn Rangpur adds: Leaders of district unit of National Teachers’-Employees’ Front (NTEF) have stressed on united efforts of the teachers, students, guardians and employees for resisting militancy, terrorism and secret killings.
They made these observations at a human chain programme organised by district unit of NTEF on Press Club premises here on Saturday afternoon for resisting militancy, terrorism, fundamentalist extremism in the name of religion.
Hundreds of the leaders and common member of the organisation, common teachers and employees of different educational institutions participated in the programme with Convener of district unit of NTEF Principal Monwar Hossain in the chair.
Convener of Lalmonirhat unit of NTEF Principal Azizar Rahman, its Joint Convener Mokbular Rahman, General Secretary of Rangpur Sadar upazila unit of NTEF Principal Manjuara Parveen, Principal of Samaj Kallyan Biddya Bithi College Nahida Yasmin and Professor Barek Al, addressed the programme among others.
In their speeches, the speakers strongly condemned militant attacks and killings of innocent foreign and local citizens at Gulshan and Sholakia, terrorism, militancy, secret and targeted killings and fundamentalist extremism in the country.
Principal Monwar Hossain said Islam is the religion of peace adding that those, who are involved with terrorism, militancy and secret and targeted killings, do not believe in religion and they are enemies of Islam and the whole humanity.
He called upon the teachers, students, employees, guardians and common people for launching a vigorous social movement to unitedly resist militancy, terrorism and secret killings and establish peace in the country.
