Speakers at a seminar in the city yesterday called for united social resistance along with strict role of law enforcers and proper application of laws to prevent repression on women and children.
United efforts by family, society and state can help stop all sorts of violence against women and children, they said.
The seminar was organized by Nari Oikya Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club with Parishad President Lutfan Nesa Khan in the chair.
Secretary of Ministry for Women and Children Affairs Tariqul Islam addressed the seminar as the chief guest.
Bangladesh Shishu Academy Director and eminent writer Selina Hossain, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Krishna Pado Roy, Women Lawyers Association President Advocate Salma Ali, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics Project Director Zahidul Haq Sardar and Ministry for Women and Children Affairs Multi-sectoral Project Director Dr. Abul Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
Tariqul Islam said issues related to repression on women and children would be included in school textbooks from the next year.
The government is already carrying out counseling of guardians and children through the Shishu Academy across the country about prevention of repression, teasing and violence, he added.
Referring to application of law to stop repression, the secretary said only government initiatives are not enough. Volunteer organizations and NGOs would have to come forward to wage a movement against women repression, he added.
Selina Hossain suggested giving moral education to children in family, society and educational institutions.
Advocate Salma Islam said repression on women and children will decline, if punitive actions are taken after an incident.
