State minister for women and children affairs Meher Afroz Chuki yesterday urged the conscious section of people to build strong and united resistance against human-trafficking.
“Side by side with the proper application of laws to stop human trafficking, creation of mass awareness particularly among women, children and guardians is a must,” she said while inaugurating a project tilted “Strengthening Community for Preventing Child Trafficking and Networking” at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.
Referring to prevention of human trafficking and protection of women and children, the state minister said the victims can take help of the ‘Jatiya Help Line Centre’, if necessary. “Besides, awareness campaign on ‘The Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act, 2012 and 1974’ is very essential in this connection”, she said.
Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Nari Moitree, development agency INCIDIN, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) and Social & Economic Enhancement Programme (SEEP) jointly organized the programme with BNWLA executive director Advocate Salma Ali in the chair.
Executive Director INCIDIN Bangladesh AKM Masud Dhali presented the
keynote paper in the programme. The Netherlands ambassador to Bangladesh Leoni Margaretha Cuelenaere, joint secretary of women and children affairs ministry Aminul Islam and joint secretary of law ministry Umme-Kulsum among others, took part in the discussion.
The state minister said the present government, in the meantime, has taken various pragmatic steps, including mass awareness campaign, to prevent women and children trafficking.
“We are jointly working with eight neigbouring countries to ensure the protection of the women and children and monitoring with regard to this is going on,” she added.
Chumki underscored the need for building networking and monitoring system to stop human trafficking and also rehabilitating the victims with their protection and job opportunities.
