World No Tobacco Day observed: United efforts to strengthen tobacco control campaign stressed

The health hazards as well as losses of human lives being caused from consumption of smoking and non-smoking tobacco products are obstructing the process of achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The observation came at a post-rally discussion arranged in conference room of the Civil Surgeon here in observance of the World No Tobacco Day-2017.
The district and health administrations in association with District Anti-tobacco Task Force Committee, Tobacco Control Coalition (TCC), Association for Community Development (ACD) and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance and other organisations organised the programmes.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman presided over the discussion.
Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Md Zakirul Islam, Focal Person of Rangpur TCC Shushanto Bhowmick, Project Coordinator of ACD Ehsanul Amin Emon, District Sanitary Inspector Mahbub Rahman, representative of BRAC Nazmul Haque spoke it.
Medical Officer at Civil Surgeon Office Dr Ruhul Amin presented the keynote paper narrating grievous consequences from consumption of smoking and non-smoking tobacco products.
The Deputy Commissioner in his speech stressed on popularising cultivation of substitute crops replacing tobacco and strict enforcement of the tobacco control laws for greater national interests and smooth national development in attaining the SDGs.
Narrating catastrophic impacts from consumption of tobacco products, Ehsanul Haque Emon said 43 per cent adult population in Bangladesh are consuming tobacco products as those are being sold at the cheapest rates in local markets.
Citing the latest survey reports of the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Emon said one lakh people are embracing death from tobacco-related diseases in Bangladesh annually.
“About 4.20 crore people are being affected by indirect smoking in addition to huge losses being caused to the public health, economy and environment by production, processing and consumption of tobacco products,” he said.
Shushanto Bhowmick stressed on cancelling the present slab-based taxation system and imposing specific excise taxes of 70 per cent of retail price for all smoking and non-smoking tobacco products to save public heath, environment and national economy.
Nazmul Haque demanded for imposing heavy taxes on all tobacco products to raise price of those by at least three times to discourage consumption and get rid of tobacco catastrophes for saving hundreds of human lives annually.
BSS from Rajshahi reports: Speakers at a discussion here on Wednesday called for taking united efforts of all government and non-government organizations and volunteers concerned to strengthen the tobacco control campaign for substantial reduction of tobacco consumption.
They came up with the observation at a discussion titled “Tobacco – a threat to development” held in conference hall of Civil Surgeon Office.
District Tobacco Control Task-force Committee organized the function to mark the World No Tobacco Day- 2017.
Various government and non-government development organizations like Rajshahi City Corporation, Association for Community Development (ACD), Anti- Tobacco Media Alliance, PSTC, World Vision and Tilottoma joined it.
BSS from Khulna adds: Speakers here on Wednesday underscored the need for putting health warnings on packets of all tobacco products mandatory to make people more aware of the adverse impact of smoking on human health.
The lack of implementation of the Smoking Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2015 leads to large-scale damage to public health in Bangladesh, they observed.
They also urged the government to implement all existing clauses under the Tobacco Control Act to reduce all kinds of tobacco consumption among the people. The speakers made the observation while addressing a discussion, marking the World No Tobacco Day at the conference room of Khulna deputy commissioner.
With the theme of “Tobacco-a threat to development”, Khulna District Task Force organised the event with Deputy Commissioner Amin UL Ahsan in the chair.
The deputy commissioner, who is also the president of District Task Force Committee, stressed on the attachment of visible health warnings message on all tobacco products.
