United efforts to combat illicit drugs trafficking stressed

Speakers at a post-rally discussion here opined that an united efforts has become an urgent need to combat illicit trafficking of drugs along with its trading and abusing to protect people and the young generation in particular.
They said 80 percent of the drug addicts belong to the age group of 15 to 30 in the country. So, there is no alternative to adopt measures of combating addiction of drugs.
They made this observation while launching a month-long special anti-drugs campaign at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner in Rajshahi today. District Administration and local office of the Department of Narcotics and Drugs Control organized the event.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Nur-Ur-Rahman and Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Md Sarder Tamij Uddin Ahmed addressed the discussion as chief guest and special guests respectively with Additional Director of Department of Drugs Control Mujibur Rahman Patwari in the chair.
Superintendent of Police Muazzem Hossain Bhuiyan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Rajshahi Md Salahudd, Civil Surgeon Dr Sanjit Kumar Shaha and Deputy Director of Department of Drugs Control Lutfor Rahman Patwari also spoke.
Chief Guest Nur-Ur-Rahman said maladjustment, rising crime, health hazards, murder and suicide are the major consequences of abusing of drugs like heroin, phensidyl, ganja, pathedrine and tranquilizers.
He said the law enforcement agencies alone isn’t capable to combat the social disease but community participation coupled with family and social contribution is very important to this end.
He said forging social resistance has become indispensable to uproot the crime as it’s being adjudged as a grave concern in the society.
Sarder Tamij Uddin called for arranging trilateral meeting with the neighbouring countries so that India and Myanmar don’t send drugs to Bangladesh as our country isn’t producer of drugs but being used as consumer as a whole.
He said drugs- free society must be built at any cost to protect people particularly the young generation from deadly aggression of the drugs.
He urged the community people to extend their wholehearted cooperation towards law enforcing agencies with authentic information about the drugs traders and traffickers so that they could be brought to book.
Call to expedite social services
Speakers at a post-rally discussion here on Tuesday unequivocally called for expediting the social services for welfare of the people with special needs and other underprivileged sections of the society.
They put emphasis on ensuring transparency and accountability in all the welfare-oriented social service activities so that the target group of people could derive total benefits of the welfare programs.
Department of Social Services (DSS) and District administration jointly organized the discussion at Shishu Academy auditorium in observance of the National Social Service Day-2018.
Akhter Jahan, MP, and Deputy Commissioner Helal Mahmud Sharif addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with deputy director of the department Rashedul Kabir in the chair.
Social Worker Shaheen Akhter Rainy, Divisional Director of DSS Zulfikar Haider and Member of National Disabled Welfare Council Mozammel Haque also spoke.
Lawmaker Akhter Jahan said the government has been implementing various social safety net programs for overall development of the public in general and urged the officials and staff concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty for a successful implementation of the programs.
Earlier, a huge rally was brought out from the C&B Crossing marking the day. The rally paraded some thoroughfares before being converged into the meeting venue.
Nearly 100 government and non-government officials and employees and volunteers participated in the discussion.
In observance of the day, a daylong fair was organized at the academy premises. More than 22 government, non-government and voluntary organizations set stalls showcasing their products.
