United efforts needed checking money laundering : Governor

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman Sunday called for an all-out cooperation against money laundering to keep the economy stable for the sake of sustainable development.
“Illegal money does not play a positive role in the economic development. A mutual cooperation and united efforts are must to check money laundering,” he said.
The BB Governor made the call while addressing as the chief guest the closing session of a conference on “Money Laundering Prevention and Compliance-2016” in Habiganj, said a press release here.
Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) organised the three-day conference, participated by senior officials of 56 commercial banks, with the theme, “Stemming illicit flow of funds from Bangladesh: Special focus on Trade Based Money Laundering”.
Terming money laundering and financing terrorism as grievous crimes, DR Atiur Rahman said money laundering is one of the major obstacles to keeping economy stable.
The government has adopted various strategies to prevent money laundering and financing of terrorism, he said and praised the banks’ role against such criminal acts.
Hailing the BFIU activities against money laundering, he called upon all banks to assist BFIU as it is playing a vital role to prevent such offences to accelerate the country’s socio- economic development.
He also called for a strong surveillance against the cyber threats as the world is witnessing a rise of such crimes side by side with increasing digitization and automation transaction. “We must ensure cyber security by checking cyber threats,” he added.
