Abdul Muqit Chowdhury :
Holy Ramzan is the best month. It conveys the message of special blessings for mankind. The Quran, Holy scripture for eternal and universal guidance was revealed in this month. Ramzan is the best period for human emancipation in
this world and salvation in the hereafter. According to the Holy Quran and Hadith it has unique merit, multiple virtue, special characteristic in moral, spiritual upliftment, physical well-being and socio-economic welfare of the poor and distressed people, their economic emancipation by compulsory payment of Jakat and other charitable activities. The rozadars have the greatest opportunity to avail the best virtue in this month of special blessings.
The Holy Quran ordains to observe fasting in the following verse :
“So every one of you who is present (at home) during that month should spend it in fasting … ” (Sura Baqara 2: 185)
The facilities and concessions given by Allah has also been revealed in the same verse : “But if anyone is ill or on a journey the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later.” (Sura Baqara 2:185)
Verse 184 says : “(Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later.” (Sura Baqara 2:184)
Allama Yusuf Ali in ‘The Holy Quran : Translation and Commentary’ comments : “Illness and journey must not be interpreted in an elastic sense : they must be such as to cause real pain or sufferings if the fast were observed.”
Allah reveals about His intention in the following way : “Allah intends every facility for you. He does not want to put you to difficulties.” (Sura Baqara 2: 185)
The verse is concluded with expectation of Allah : “(He wants you) to complete prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.”
Allama Yusuf Ali comments : “The regulations are again and again coupled with an insistence on two things : (a) the facilities and concessions given, and (b) the spiritual significance of the fast, without which it is like an empty shell without a kernel. If we realise this, we shall look upon Ramzan, not as a burden, but as a blessing, and shall be duly grateful for the lead given to us in this matter.”
The minors, for pre-puberty years; the insane, for the period of insanity; unconscious, for the period of unconsciousness; and non- Muslims, before conversion to Islam–have been exempted from fasting and also released from expiation for defaults.
