The two-storey building, as well as several other establishments of Bandarkhola Union Parishad (UP) complex sitting on an eroded river bank in Shibchar upazila of
Madaripur, has finally collapsed into the Padma River.
Sources said a large portion of the UP complex had been washed away on Sunday evening due to heavy current in the river.
The complex was built in 2010.
Madaripur WDB Executive Engineer Partha Pratim Saha said: “It was almost impossible to protect the establishments from the erosion as the complex is in an erosion-prone area and the river has taken a serious turn. Nothing could be done.”
UNO Asaduzzaman also echoed the words of Partha Pratim.
“We have planned to set up a permanent flood protection dam on the river bank in the coming winter season,” UNO added.
According to local sources, the flood situation in southern districts of the country has improved as water levels in most of its rivers saw a receding trend in the last few days.
With the flood water receding, erosion has become a destructive force in several districts including Madaripur and Shariatpur, increasing the sufferings of people already devastated by the floods.
People of Bandarkhola union parishad (UP) in Shibchar upazila and officials of the UP complex became worried as the river erosion in the union has got worse over the past few days, taking several villages under the river during the period.
They were facing uncertainty as the complex was under threat of being washed away due to the increasing erosion by the Padma River.
They urged the local administration to protect the complex several times.
News on the complex had also been published in Dhaka Tribune on September 17.
Nizamuddin Bepari, chairman of the union council, said a large portion of the UP complex and several other establishments in the area went into the river bed due to heavy current in the river.
He urged the government to take steps to save the area from erosion.
Recently, the river erosion fueled by floods in the district had worsened so much in the upazila that two schools where hundreds of students from poor backgrounds would pursue their education collapsed a few days ago.
On August 18, the building of Kazirsura Government Primary School No 26 in Bandarkhola union under Shibchar upazila was swept away by Padma River. More than 200 students used to study in the school.
Moreover, the entire three-storied SESDP Model High School building sank into the Padma River as riverbanks gave way in Nuruddin Madborkandi village in Shibchar upazila on July 23.
