Staff Reporter :
Steps at different levels of the long way to the main Senakunja Hall at Dhaka Cantonment are found unsafe and dangerous at night.
The place is spacious and attractive when illuminated everywhere in the evening. The people hold mostly wedding parties at night. But the steps are neither lighted internally nor special lights are seen near about the steps. Security guards told that there were lights but went out of order and have remained so.
There is also the requirement of putting lights off in the open space at about 11pm before all the guests get time to leave after the party.
On Saturday night Barrister Mainul Hosein’s daughter Munira Hosein after a wedding party, slipped a step for not seeing where the walk way ended and new steps began and got her right ankle broken. Now she is in a city hospital receiving treatment. The tumbled could have been more serious, even fatal.
The guests present there said it is a frequent occurrence for persons to tumble over for the steps are not being visible. Not to arrange sufficient light for the steps at various levels, this situation appeared hazardous to the authorities, if only they cared. In any law abiding country the authorities would be legally liable for damages so caused for their sheer negligence.
Observers find it difficult to believe that the Cantonment authorities can be so unmindful about safety in public places of their own creation.
Our reporter tried to reach the concerned officer for any clarification but not answered. We tried to get a picture of the place that was also not possible for security restrictions.
