UNIDO technical coop for hi-tech equipment sought

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu on Wednesday urged UNIDO to extend its technical cooperation to manufacture high precision engineering, pharmaceuticals and medical devices in Bangladesh. “Bangladesh is moving quickly towards a middle-income country utilizing scope of diversification in manufacturing industry and products, and UNIDO would be an important partner to the journey,” he added.
The minister, who is now visiting South Korea, passed the remarks during have a meeting with the director general of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yang at Lotte Hotel.
Praising UNIDO for implementing better work and standard programme (BEST) in Bangladesh, Amu said the BEST has helped to upgrade the country’s aquaculture food safety system to European Union standard level.
He sought cooperation from UNIDO to develop quality infrastructure in the country under country programme.
Replying to the minister, the UNIDO director general assured to continue its cooperation to help Bangladesh keep going industrialization progress.
He praised Bangladesh for the initiatives of environment and labour safety in textile, leather and leather goods industries.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to South Korea Zulfiqur Rahman, labour councilor Zahidul Islam Bhuiyan and UNIDO officials were present in the meeting.
Later, China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection (CECEP) Chairman Xiakang Wang met with the minister at his hotel.
During the meeting, the CECEP Chairman showed his keenness to invest $2 billion in Bangladesh’s construction materials industry.
They also talked about setting up environment friendly auto brick manufacturing unit in Bangladesh.
