UNICEF has expressed its concern about the recent series of attacks on teachers in different educational institutions in the country.
“UNICEF is deeply concerned about the recent series of attacks on teachers in Bangladesh. UNICEF stands with the country in condemning these attacks, and we call for the safety and security of teachers to be upheld,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.
UNICEF also said that the teachers play the vital role in imparting education to children, but when a teacher is attacked it is akin to the attacks on education.
“Teachers play a critical role in ensuring children’s right to education. But to do their job – to teach students to think critically, grow to their fullest potential and be good human beings – they need to be able to teach without fear,” it added.
“Attacks on teachers are attacks on education. If we fail to protect teachers from violence, it will be children who ultimately suffer,” UNICEF said.
The recent killing and harassment of teachers in the country has created huge uproar and civil society members and political leaders have condemned such incidents.
They also said that when the teachers are helpless in their educational institutions, the total education system will collapse if proper steps are not taken.
