United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Chief Filippo Grandi on Saturday arrived Bangladesh to get a firsthand grasp of the scale of the crisis, meet Rohingya refugees and see UNHCR’s continued ramping up of its response.
Filippo Grandi visited Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp under Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar after his arrival in Bangladesh.
When asked about his activities in the refugee camp, Filippo Grandi told media that as the chief of UN refugee agency, he was there to ‘put pressure on international community’ for their assistance to the Rohingya refugees.
The UNHCR chief also thanked Bangladesh government for humanitarian support.
“The latest exodus from Myanmar’s Rakhine State is a chilling reminder of the catastrophic human consequences. It ensures when conflicts and human rights violations compel refugees’ flee go unchecked,” said Filippo Grandi.
At least 429,000 Rohingya refugees who had fled in Bangladesh after the latest violence that broke in Myanmar since August 25.
