A Correspondent, Cox’s Bazar :

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) distributed 200 waste bins among 100 households in Teknaf Upazila of the district recently. UNDP’s Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) funded the project titled “Sustainable Solutions to Solid Waste: A Local Response to the Rohingya Crisis in Bangladesh”.A UNDP report in June 2018 estimates that Cox’s Bazar Municipality produced 0.45kg of waste per person per day, while two upazilas- Ukhia and Teknaf, still produce over 10,000 tonnes of waste per month. As there is no waste management system, much of the waste is dumped in public areas, roadsides, and local water bodies, which may cause serious health risks. A sustainable solution to solid waste management is urgently necessary.
