Underneath of flyover becomes drug addicts’ sanctuary

Vast areas of the streets in the capital city are now dominated by seven large flyovers.
Underneath of the about 28 kilometers length flyovers remain unused but turns into addicts’ sanctuary and waste bins also destroying the scenic beauty of city’s land scope.
City people of the closer areas of those flyovers expressed angers saying the authorities have no headache about the proper use of those vast spaces.
They alleged that drug addicts gather every evening in some portions of the underneath.
Besides, a section of people have throw waste beneath those flyovers, which creates an unsafe ugly and dirty environment there. Those waste spread intolerable stink.
In Sayedabad, Tikatuly and adjacent areas underneath the Mayor Hanif Flyover have been found gatherings of drug addicts. Of those drug addicts, street children occupy a big portion.
Though fences have been installed underneath, the streets people tear those in some places and stay their day-night.
In Bangabazar area under the flyover, horse cart owners are using the space as their horse’s, house and cart stores. Keeping materials likes sacks of horse foods, drums, water pans and other things they have created a dirty environment there. On the other hand, large areas of under the flyover’s Sayedabad bus terminal have been given lease to vehicle owners.
As a result the areas become dirty places for mass gathering of transport workers and misuse. In North Shahjahanpur under the Khilgaon flyover, furniture businessmen have established their makeshift shops.
When asked they answered that they had paid money to the local musclemen for this regrd.
Contacted, Kazi Md. Borhan Uddin said, “We will conduct drives soon against the grabbers. We have plans to start there beautification work soon.”
DSCC former Mayor Sayeed Khokon told The New Nation last year in his tenure that the spaces under the flyover would be given lease to nursery owners.
He said that number of nurseries will be established there so that they can use it as a big open garden.
Developed countries like the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Malaysia are using such spaces as beautification, entertainment parks, artificial fountain, water body and library.
When contacted, Adil Muhammad Khan, prominent Urban Planner, told The New Nation, “The spaces should be used as social oriented events ensuring safety in nearby streets.”
He said, the spaces can be used as children’s sporting zones subject of ensuring safety in road crossing.
