Under construction road engulfed by river in Morrelganj

About two hundred feet of a road was engulfed by its adjacent river in village Ghasikhali within No.11 Baharbunia Union Parishad under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagearhat district before the completion of its construction work due to defective construction, it is allegedly .
19 hundred feet out of the 2,260 feet long road running from Ghasikhali bazar to the residence of one Hatem Ali Dokandar (shopkeeper) was constructed so far. But just with the construction of the road more than its 2 hundred feet was collapsed in the adjacent river Manik.
The Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED), Bagerhat invited a tender for the repairing of the road (from Ghasikhali bazar to the residence of Hatem Ali Dokandar) earlier. 2 contractors named Ripon Hossain and Khokon got the tender as the lowest bidders of Tk.22 lakh. Besides this, the local UP Chairman was given an order to complete the earth woks of the road.
The local people complained that the earthwork was not done properly as per the schedule. On the other hand, no embankment was constructed on the river-side in order to protect the road from the erosion and consequently, just with the beginning of its soling works with bricks it was collapsed in the adjacent river, particularly at the point of Ghasikhali Govt. Primary School and Ghasikhali Hafzia Madrsa. As a result, thousand of school going students and passers-by are now suffering a lot of inconveniences.
The locals also complained that sufficient quantity of sands was not placed under the brick soling works of the road.
Ashiq Yamin, Upazila LGED engineer of Morrelganj disclosed to the newsmen, the road may be collapsed due to heavy downpour.
He added, the damaged road will be reconstructed with the deposit money of the contractors while T.M. Ripon, Chairman of the Union Parishad told the newsmen, the problem was created due to recent torrential and incessant rainfall and the road will be reconstructed at the time of sunny days.
