An under construction bridge on the Louhjong river in Tangail town has been collapsed due to use of low quality construction materials, it is alleged.
The bridge was awarded to BRICS & BRIDGE LIMITED to construct the bridge at a cost of Tk 3.5 crore over the Louhjong River in the Tangail’s Bardoma area on the Beradoma-Omarpur road.
Locals alleged that the under construction bridge has collapsed as the company didn’t use quality construction materials and negligence of supervision by appropriate authority are responsible for the incident.
The construction cost of the eight-meter-wide and 30-meter-long bridge has been estimated at Tk 3.60 crore.
Construction of the bridge began on November 12, 2020 and the construction work of the bridge was supposed to be completed on May 11. Only 55 percent of the work has been completed even though the deadline has passed.
The commuters of the areas will have to suffer for a long time as the under construction bridge is collapsed on Thursday morning. Tangail Municipality Executive Engineer Shibbir Ahmed Azmi said a committee has been formed to investigate the incident. It is learned that Tangail Municipality is implementing the bridge under the local government engineering department. Locals alleged that the contractor and the municipality’s negligence are responsible for the incident and authority concerned already paid the money to contractor before completion the bridge. They demanded legal action against those involved in the incident.
