Climate experts demanded for allocating the green climate fund without any condition with a view to assisting the country in adaptation and mitigation practices to counter climate change.
Bangladesh should raise its voice in the upcoming Paris conference for an unconditional ‘donation’ from the green climate fund, said the experts while addressing a roundtable meeting on ‘Climate Politics: Road to Paris’ at National Press Club on Wednesday.
The roundtable was jointly organised by Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum (BCJF), Institute of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB) and Network on Climate Change Bangladesh (NCCB).
The experts urged the government to take strong initiative in this regards in the upcoming conference. The climate experts urged all concerned to play a united role for protecting interests of Bangladesh, not allowing the scope for any walkover in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21 to be held at Paris from November 30 to December 11 next. They also urged all concerned to take strong role for not stopping the LDC fund for country’s development.
Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forest Ministry Dr Hasan Mahmud said, this is the last chance to incorporate the issue of climate refugees in the upcoming Paris agreement.
“The sea level is on rise in Bangladesh as well. Due to the global warming resulting people are being displaced. So the climate refugee has become a reality for Bangladesh,” he said.
“This is why, the climate refugees will have to be included in the United Nations’ definition of refugees,” Dr Hasan, also former environment and forest minister said.
Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) chairman Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said Bangladesh will have to raise voice prioritizing interests of Bangladesh in the upcoming COP 21.
Many countries like Bangladesh will not be able to cope up with the adverge impact of climate change unless emission of the greenhouse gases is not reduced, he said.
Presided over by IDEB President AKMA Hamid, the roundtable was addressed, among others, by the National Press Club general secretary Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Shaimum Sarwar Kamal MP, Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan general secretary Dr Abdul Matin, Equity BD Coordinator Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, NCCB coordinator Mizanur Rahman Bijoy and BCJF President Kawsar Rahman and BCJF General Secretary Motahar Hosain.
