Law enforcers have detained two uncles of Faizur Rahman, the man who attacked Prof Mohammed Zafar Iqbal in Sylhet on Saturday. One of the detainees is a district leader of the Sunamganj Krishak League.
Police arrested the attacker’s uncle Fazlur
Rahman from his family’s home at Sheikhpara near Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on Saturday night. Jalalabad Police Station OC Shafiqul Islam said that Fazlur Rahman is a joint convener of the Sunamganj District Krishak League. Other relatives were not found during a search of the area. RAB officials have detained Faizur Rahman’s uncle Abdul Kaher in a raid on Kalidarkapon Village in Sunamganj’s Derai Upazila on Sunday morning. “His house was locked and no one was home,” Sunamganj RAB-9 Company Commander Faisal Ahmed told bdnews24.com. “His uncle was detained from a neighbouring house. We are questioning him.”
Students and teachers grabbed the attacker immediately after the incident. He was severely beaten and then detained at a building on campus. RAB took him into custody after a police and RAB interrogation. Neighbours identified the attacker after photos appeared in the media. Iqbal was taken to Sylhet’s Osmani Medical College Hospital immediately after the attack. He was later transferred to the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka after undergoing surgery. “During his interrogation the youth said that Zafar Iqbal is an enemy of Islam,” RAB-9 Commander Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed told the media on Saturday night. “That is why he attacked him.”
“He said he was a student at Sylhet’s Alia Madrasa. But it has not been confirmed by the madrasa administration.”
