UN, US wish voters a peaceful, festive day in city polls

UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Mia Seppo on Sunday wished Bangladeshi voters in Barishal, Rajshahi and Sylhet a peaceful day as they are set to cast their votes in the elections to three city corporations billed for Monday. “As polls open on Monday at 8 am, we wish Bangladeshi voters in Barisal, Rajshahi and Sylhet a peaceful day as they exercise their democratic right to choose their leaders in city corporation elections,” she tweeted. US Embassy in Dhaka also wished the same through a Facebook post. “We wish Bangladeshi voters in #Barisal, #Rajshahi and #Sylhet a peaceful and festive day so that all who want to participate can freely exercise their democratic right in choosing their leaders in the city corporation elections,” said the US Embassy in a post shared on its official Facebook page. The Embassy of Netherlands in Dhaka in a separate Facebook post said Bangladesh has come a very long way in its development. The economic and social progress of the country should be supported and can be further enhanced by strong, inclusive and representative institutions at all levels, said the Embassy. “Free, fair and inclusive elections are a basic condition for any credible democracy,” the Facebook post reads.
Prime Minister’s ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy sees win of three Awami League mayoral candidates in Barishal, Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporations’ polls. “I can quite confidently say that in Barishal and Rajshahi Awami League will win by a landslide. In Sylhet we are slightly ahead, but it is too close to call,” he said in a Facebook post citing a survey report.
