Staff Reporter :The United Nations (UN), the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) have condemned the killing of blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy.In a statement, the UN Resident Coordinator, Robert D. Watkins in Bangladesh condemned the killing of blogger Niloy.He termed the murder as a fatal attack saying “a heinous crime against yet another online activist and an attack on tolerance. “I am calling upon the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice in a speedy manner, including in all the previous cases,” Robert D. Watkins said in a statement. He said, police need to take concrete measures to protect citizens. “Moreover, strong condemnation against all these incidents from the all levels of society will be important to prevent further murders,” UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh said. The UN in its earlier statement already drew attention to the seemingly increasing intolerance towards people peacefully expressing their views online.Meanwhile, the spokesman of the US Department of State has condemned the killing of blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy. “The United States condemns the cowardly murder of writer/blogger Niladri in Bangladesh. We offer our condolence to his family and our support to the Bangladeshi people,” in a statement on Saturday, the spokesman of the US Department of State said. The statement says that this heinous act once again underscores the need to work together to counter violent extremism. “We stand with Bangladeshis, who reject this vicious act and who work to protect space for freedom of expression,” the spokesman said. Besides, United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Hugo Swire in a statement expressed his shock at the murder of a blogger in Bangladesh. He urged the Bangladeshi authorities to investigate his death urgently and to bring the perpetrators to justice. “I was appalled to learn of the violent murder in Bangladesh of blogger Niloy Neel, the fourth such death this year. It was a horrifying and cowardly crime. My thoughts are with Niloy’s family and friends,” he said. Hugo Swire said, the freedom of speech is a universal right which must be protected. “The UK stands together with the people and government of Bangladesh in the face of extremism,” he said.
