United Nations (UN) has expressed its willingness to work with University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent sexual harassment in all public and private universities of the country.
Country Representative of UN Women, Ms. Christine Hunter expressed her willingness on the 14th instant at a meeting with UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan at the latter’s office in the city.
Coordinator of the EVAW of UN Women, Mahtabul Hakim and UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled were present at the meeting.
Professor Mannan welcomed Christine Hunter at his office and briefed her about the measures undertaken by the UGC and government of Bangladesh in preventing sexual harassment in the country.
He also said sexual harassment is not a problem only for Bangladesh, but it is a global problem. It is being occurred both inside and outside the educational institutions all over the world, he added.
Professor Mannan also underpinned the need for building awareness to curb the problem.
He also said each university has a special committee for preventing incidents of sexual harassment.
UGC also formulated a guideline as per the directive of the High Court in this regard, he said.
