Sundarbans oil spill: UN team to share findings today

The United Nations Sundarbans Oil Spill Response mission, comprising multi-disciplinary experts from seven different countries including Bangladesh, will share its findings today (Wednesday).
The team visited the Sundarbans from December 22 to 28 to support the government of Bangladesh in containing the spillage and cleaning up; and assessing the situation and develop an action plan for a phased response and recovery.
“The team is now back to Dhaka,” said an official at the UNDP Bangladesh office adding that the team will hold a press briefing to share its experience with the media.
The press conference will be held at Sonargaon Hotel at about 4 pm.
In response to a government request, the UN system in Bangladesh mobilised the international team of experts to support the government’ s drive to clean up the oil spill in the Sundarbans.
The oil spill took place on December 9 when an oil tanker sank in Shela River. Subsequently, the government requested the UNDP on December 15 to support the government’s efforts.
