Chittagong Bureau :
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has taken a decision to renovate the swimming pool at United Nation (UN) Park and open it for practicing swimming.
“We will renovate the swimming pool at United Nation (UN) Park. After making the swimming pole usable it will be opened for all to practice swimming,” said Mayor of CCC A J M Nasir Uddin.
He said our assets should be maintained properly. The former mayor of CCC who set up the swimming pool at UN park did not construct it properly. He also did not maintain the park as well as swimming pool properly,” he alleged.
“Now, we have taken a decision to maintain the park and the pool properly,” he added.
Sources said, the CCC took the decision to lease the park to a private company as part of commercialization of the park in May this year. The CCC has completed the tender process. Sources said, CCC has called tender for management of the UN Park on February 9.
Two companies participated in the tender while one of these, Elite Park Limited offered to deposit Tk 2.2 crore at once as security money and Tk two lakh and as rent per month. Considering the highest payment, CCC is going to award the tender to Elite Park Limited, sources added.
Meanwhile, CCC has sent letter to the ministry concerned for permission to lease the UN Park to private company.
But, the ministry denied the proposal in this regard. Mayor of CCC A J M Nasir Uddin and Minister Engineer Mosharaf Hossain locked in altercation in several functions over the dispute of the UN park at that time. Later, after long six months, CCC returned from the decision and Ministry of Public Works and Housing is going to build a modern park there.
It may be mentioned that earlier, locals of Panchlaish and Chittagong City dwellers, former mayors including A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury and Mohammad Monjur Alam Monju, city planners and environment activists are protesting the decision of CCC to make the UN Park commercial one. They also protest the decision to allow any private commercial company for management of the park.
Later, CCC came back from the decision to lease the UN Park to a private company as part of commercialization of the park. The Ministry of Public Works and Housing decided to build a modern park there and CCC to maintain the park on behalf of the ministry.
