BSS, Dhaka :
The United Nations Day will be celebrated in Bangladesh today as elsewhere in the world in a befitting manner.
The day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
The United Nations Day is devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization. United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, which runs from 20 to 26 October.
In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly declared 24 October, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as which “shall be devoted to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for” its work. Since then October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day.
In a message on the occasion of the day, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged all member states of the United Nations to reaffirm their commitment to a better and brighter future for all.
“As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all,” he said.
Seven decades after its founding, the UN secretary general said, the United Nations remains a beacon for all humanity. “Every day, the United Nations feeds the hungry and shelters those driven from their homes,” he said.
Ban Ki-moon said the United Nations works for the entire human family of seven billion people, and cares for the earth, our one and only home. And it is the diverse and talented staff of the United Nations who help bring the Charter to life.
He said, the 70th anniversary is a moment to recognize their dedication – and to honour the many who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
