The United Nations (UN) is concerned over the deteriorating law and order situation and the government’s control on the media in Bangladesh.
During his daily press briefing on Friday, Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General said expressed this concern.
Referring to the editorial of The New York Times published on Sunday, titled “Bangladesh Descends into Lawlessness”, a questioner drew his attention to the
killing of the LGBT editor, Xulhaz Mannan, bloggers killing, ongoing extrajudicial killing and the government harassment and detention of an 82 year old editor and the President of the Bangladesh Union of Journalists.
“So, these things are happening in Bangladesh. What can be done to rescue Bangladesh from this lawlessness?” replying to such a question, Stéphane Dujarric said: “The Secretary General, various human rights parts of the organization have expressed their concern at the targeted violence we’ve seen in Bangladesh against reporters and bloggers.
