AFP, Sochi :
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is to attend the Winter Olympics in the Russian resort of Sochi as well as address a session of the International Olympic Committee, IOC president Thomas Bach said on Monday.
Ban is set to be one of the highest profile guests at the Olympics, which open on February 7 and have been dogged by a succession of controversies about Russia’s human rights record.
“The Secretary General also attended the London (2012 Summer Games) and we are very honoured that he has accepted my invitation not just to attend the Olympic Games but also to address the IOC session in Sochi” this week, Bach told AFP in an interview on Monday.
“The Secretary General will give us some inspiration about how we can strengthen the bond between the UN and IOC,” he added.
