Haoliang Xu, United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General and the Chair of the UN Development Group Asia-Pacific, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka today (Sunday) on a five-day visit to Bangladesh.
Xu is also the UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director for the Regional Bureau of Asia and the Pacific. This is Xu’s second visit to Bangladesh.
During his visit, Xu will attend the two-day Bangladesh Development Forum (BDF), set to begin today (Sunday) in Dhaka. He will speak on social protection and other issues.
Xu is also scheduled to meet with the finance minister, the speaker of parliament, the state minister for foreign affairs and other senior figures in the
government, development agencies, diplomatic missions and the private sector.
He will also meet with Sir Fazle Hasan Abed of BRAC.
His visit builds on 40 years of support to Bangladesh from UNDP, and looks towards how that relationship can be transformed as Bangladesh rapidly emerges as a middle-income country, said a UNDP press release.
In his capacity as Chair of the United Nations Development Group Asia-Pacific, he will be exploring how the UN in Bangladesh can best align its new five strategic plans with the government’s five-year plan and “Vision 2021”.
During the visit, Xu will also chair a roundtable discussion on the transformative agenda of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), bringing together representatives from government, civil society and private sector.
