Fish production in Nimgachhi Samasjbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo in Raiganj is about 1797,37 metric tonnes yearly and its market value is Tk 2041 lakh.
Around 8500 poor and ultra poor men and women of 416 villages in Pabna and Sirajganj districts have become self-reliant through Nimgachhi Samasjbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo in Raiganj.
And every beneficiary receives taka 20,000 to 25,000 yearly. Besides, many poor and ultra poor men and women have become successful through fish cultivation.
The present government has allocated Tk 3364,44 lakh to implement Nimgachhi Samajbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo in financial year 2014-15. Sources said there are 546 ponds on 426,37 hectares land under the project and number of beneficiaries people are 8500.
The project started in September 2014 and it will be completed in June 2019. The project authorities have set up pump houses, guest houses and dormitories. Works of road construction, renovation and repair works, setting up of five shallow tubewells, two solar panels, ponds and wetlands restoration, excavation works have already been completed.
The authorities have trained about 600 beneficiaries people on the fish cultivation. And many people have came from deferent part of the country for training on the fish cultivation in the project training centre. Source said, with the help of support of the UK government Nimgachhi Matsyachach Unnayan Prokolpo was started in 1980-85. Under the project re-excavation, repairing and renovation of ponds and necessary infrastructures were built and during the project, about 783 ponds with necessary infrastructures were leased to Grameen Matsya Foundation till 2011 for 25 years. Then, poor and ultra poor people were not benefited when the project was under Grameen Matsya Foundation.
After becoming the end of lease with Grameen Matsya Foundation. Intervention of Honorable prime Minister were transferred the all wealth of Nimgachhi project to the Fisheries department in 20/01/2011. And later, the present government has allocated fund for implementing Nimgachhi Samajbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo September in 2011. So that, poor and ultra poor people who are lived in the area around the ponds and they can be benefited through society based fish farming . Ten thousand of poor people are now being benefited by Nimgachhi Samajbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo. Many beneficiaries told this correspondent that after meeting the demand of the country and fish can be exported abroad.
They also said that the Nimgachhi Samajbhittic Motshochash Prokolpo is a model for the country. And through society-based fish farming poor and ultra poor people of the country can be made self-reliant, they added.
Sources said, at present, fish production in the project is about 4000 to 4500 kg per hectares yearly.
And about 100,000 tonnes of fish production can be achieved at the end of the term of the project. About 100,000 people will be benefited through this project and their permanent and temporary work will be generated and they will become self-reliant if there is no lack of fund.
Abdus Salam, Project Director , Nimgachhi Samajbhittic Matsyachach Prokolpo in Raiganj, he told The New Nation that their employees, officers and engineers are monitoring and supervising the activities in the project areas all time and providing necessary help and support to the beneficiary people.
