Bangladesh Harijan Oikkya Parishad, a platform for the country’s Dalits or low-caste Hindus, has served a 24-hour ultimatum on the government to rehabilitate the people of the Gopibagh Railway Colony.
The organization’s president Krishna Lal announced the ultimatum at a press conference held at Jatiya Press Conference in the capital on Wednesday.
Krisna Lal said that the government evicted them on January 22 from the area without any notice. They are now living under the open sky.
“If the government does not take any initiative for rehabilitating them within the next 24 hours then we will go for tough agitation,” he also said.
Nirmol Chandra Das, Secretary General of the organization said that the colony’s people were living there for 40 years and they are mostly employed in cleaning jobs for the city. So they urged the government to rehabilitate these people immediately.
Moni Rani, an SSC student, said they had been evicted by the government without any rehabilitation.
“My SSC examination will start from February but I cannot study properly now. Even landlords are not interested to rent us their houses. So we request the government to rehabilitate us soon,” she also said.
