Centre for Sustainable Development (CSD) of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) organised 4th Annual Conference for Sustainable Development emphasizing on the tracking progress on Sustainable Development Goal 13, “Climate Action”
Abul Kalam Azad, Principal Coordinator (SDGs Affairs), PMO delivered his speech as chief guest at the opening ceremony of the conference held recently. Prof Vally Koubi of ETH Zurich and University of Bern, Switzerland, an international authority on the impacts of climate change, gave the keynote address.
Dr Saleemul Huq, Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and Dr Kazi Anis Ahmed, Vice President of ULAB Board of Trustees were special guests at the inaugural session.
Prof Imran Rahman, Special Advisor to the Board of Trustees at ULAB and Dr Samiya Selim, Director of CSD, ULAB delivered the welcome and opening speeches respectively.
All the speeches emphasized on the importance of sustainability in the context of Bangladesh and finding solutions to the current problems associated with climate change. Academic research was seen as an important pathway to provide solutions along with further engagement and partnership between the public and private sector.
In the opening ceremony among others, Prof HM Jahirul Haque, Vice Chancellor of ULAB; Prof Shamsad Mortuza, Pro Vice-Chancellor of ULAB; Prof Milan Kumar Bhattacharjee, Treasurer of ULAB; Prof Akhtar Ahmed, Registrar of ULAB and different department heads were present.
The key session of the day focused on the data we need to track progress towards SDG 13, “Climate Action”. Dr Saleemul Huq presided over a heavy weight panel comprising Shamshur Rahman Khan, Deputy Secretary and SDG Focal Point for the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Mirza Shawkat Ali, Director of Climate Change at the Department of Environment; Dr Ramiz Uddin, Head of Results Management and data at the Access to information (a2i) for the Government of Bangladesh; Saudia Anwer from United Nations Development Program and Asif Ibrahim, Vice Chairman of Newage Group.
