Campus Report :
The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR has recently organized a lecture for students of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) to create awareness about the situation of refugees around the world today, and to explain who they are and why they need protection. The lecture took place at the ULAB Auditorium and was supported by ULAB Co-curricular Office. The world we live in has more people today who are forcibly displaced by conflict than any time since World War II. Now there are 60 million displaced persons, of which 20 million are refugees. These unprecedented numbers have pushed UNHCR and partners to their limits, and sadly the crisis continues to intensify. But with more and more people forced to flee, people’s anxiety has increased – often resulting in intolerance and misinformation about who refugees are.
To help build understanding and solidarity, UNHCR has launched the #WithRefugees Campaign in June. The Campaign brings to light the stories of refugees everywhere, and reminds us all about the common bonds, hopes and dreams we all share. Refugees are people like you and me who have been forced to flee their homes and often have horrific tales of trauma and loss – the #WithRefugees Campaign is inviting everyone to stand in solidarity with refugees by signing a petition that will be delivered at the UN General Assembly in September during an historic meeting on refugees and migrants.
“When Bangladesh fought its Liberation War, there were many friendly countries where the people marched for us, they campaigned for our independence, and our refugees received protection in other countries (India). As young people now, you also have a responsibility to inform yourselves about what is happening in the world today and not just stay within your narrow interests”, said ULAB Vice Chancellor Prof Imran Rahman in his closing speech.
He added, “To start with, we can each sign the UNHCR petition to show our support for the world’s refugees”.
Farheen Khan, External Relations of UNHCR delivered her presentation. She mentioned how UNHCR operates in Bangladesh and described the refugee situation of different countries. UNHCR is conducting refugee awareness lectures in a number of universities in Dhaka and can also support individuals to make donations to UNHCR refugee operations globally.
