ULAB celebrates Int’l Youth Day

University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and VSO Bangladesh jointly organized an event titled ‘Transforming Education and Youth Volunteerism’ on the occasion of International Youth Day.
Around 150 young men and women, and volunteers gathered at ULAB to celebrate the power of youth. The program began with a welcome speech by Prof Imran Rahman, special advisor to the ULAB Board of Trustees. Then, Sudipto Mukerjee, Resident Representative, UNDP Bangladesh, in his speech, said, ‘We need value-based education which should be equitable, and inclusive for all youth. For transforming education, volunteerism is important element.’
Among others, Prof Dr HM Jahirul Haque, Vice Chancellor of ULAB, Bonna Mirza, actress and social activist, Md. Aktar Uddin, Country Coordinator, UNV Bangladesh, Md. Moniruzzaman, Head of UNIC, Md. Forkhan Uddin, Country Director, VSO Bangladesh, and Prof Dr Pinki Shah, Mehdi Rajeb, Assistant Prof, ULAB School of Business commented on how to provide or create a more dynamic, inclusive and equitable education system.
The Volunteers shared their inspirational stories of passionate volunteerism. A panel discussion and an interactive session followed where panelists answered and gave solutions to the students’ various questions regarding career development, inclusive education, gender issues and overcoming obstacles.
Md Moniruzzaman explained the importance of volunteerism and how it allows one to connect to the community and make it a better place, expand network, and boost social skills. Mirza spoke of how artist groups could contribute to promoting youth volunteerism and how she herself could create awareness through community-based theater.
Prof Shah emphasized the importance of increasing the budget allocation in education sector and Mehdi Rajeb discussed the role of teachers and students as well towards a better education system using limited resources.
Like the other panelists, Md. Aktar Uddin encouraged the students to engage in youth volunteerism and self-development. The best volunteers were also honored with UN SDG medals and certificates.
