bdnews24.com :British parliament has appreciated Bangladesh government’s response to the post-elections violence targeting minorities while condemning “the calculated and indiscriminate attacks”.In a formal motion, the House particularly noted with appreciation Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to the affected areas and her assurance of “compensation, rehabilitation and security for the victims”.It also urged all stakeholders to uphold the tradition of communal harmony that has been “a hallmark of the people of Bangladesh”.The House further called on all political parties to ensure that such attacks do not recur in the future, and that the rights and dignity of the minority people are upheld. The Awami League formed the government for the second successive term after Jan 5 elections, which the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies vowed to resist, resulting in violence.Members of the Hindu community, known to be supporters of Awami League, had been attacked in different parts of the country, reportedly for casting their ballot. The House of Commons was particularly “disturbed” by the repetition of such incidents that took place after the general election in 2001, the perpetrators of which “were not brought to justice,” the motion said.Opposition Labour Party MP Jim Fitzpatrick was the primary sponsor of the Early Day Motion placed on Feb 12.Fitzpatrick along with ruling Conservative Party MP Peter Bottomley, and its ally Liberal Democrats MP Bob Russell signed the motion.
