Police arrested an expatriate from Majortila Shyamoli area of the city on Sunday on charge of demanding dowry from his wife.
The arrested was identified as Shaheed Chowdhury, 40, a UK expatriate and son of Abdul Malek of Gaharpur village in Balaganj upazila.
Locals said, Shaheed married Hafsa Maria of Inatagar village in Jagannathpur upazila in Sunamganj district 16 years back. The couple living in the UK is blessed with a son and a daughter.
Hafsa’s family sources said Shaheed has been demanding dowry from Hafsa since the marriage. Over the issue, he used to torture Hafsa.
Two months back, Shaheed returned to his village home from the UK without informing his wife.
