UK concerned over violence during City Poll campaign

Staff Reporter : British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Gibson on Tuesday expressed concern over the violent incidents that occurred during the past two weeks of campaigning for City Corporation Elections.He expressed his concern in a statement posted on the UK government’s official website on Tuesday.In a statement, he stressed that it was the responsibility of all political parties, as well as the law enforcement and election authorities, to ensure that the campaign was being conducted without violence or intimidation. He looked forward to the electorate having a real democratic choice on 28 April.On Monday, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack in the city’s Karwan Bazar area while she was electioneering in favour of her party-backed Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor candidate Tabith Awal.Khaleda was unhurt, but several members of her entourage were injured. Private television channels captured and broadcast images of the attacks, during which at least one microbus of Khaleda’s motorcade had its glass shattered.
