UK citizen linked with IS taken on 3-day remand

Court Correspondent :The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday (Monday) placed a Bangladesh origin British citizen on a three-day police remand in a case filed for his alleged link with Islamic State militants. Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor granted the remand after Detective Branch (DB) Sub-Inspector Aslam Ali produced accused Samiun Rahman alias Ibne Hamdan, 24, to the court with 10 days remand plea on Monday. No lawyer appeared in the court during the remand hearing. He was arrested from Kamalapur in the capital early Monday following information gleaned from some other people arrested recently in connection with their alleged links with militancy, told the prosecution. He came to Dhaka in February to recruit some men from Bangladesh and Myanmar, they claimed. However, Hamdan told newsmen present in the courtroom that he had been arrested from Nabiganj in Habiganj district five days ago. When asked whether Hamdan is an IS member, he replied in English, “I am not an IS member. To know more about me, contact the UK embassy”. He is a son of late Hamdu Mia from village Fotarchar in Habiganj.
