UGC team meets Singapore Nat’l Varsity officials

A ten member University Grants Commission (UGC), Bangladesh team led by the Chairman of UGC Prof Abdul Mannan met the high officials of National University of Singapore (NUS) at the Conference Hall of NUS on Monday.
The NUS team was led by Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost of NUS Professor Tan Eng Chye. Currently Professor Mannan is on a study visit to Singapore and Australia leading a ten member delegation comprising members and official of UGC, Member of the Planning Commission of Bangladesh and high of officials of the Ministry of Education. The team is exploring possibilities of establishing academic relationship and learn from the Quality Assurance System of the leading universities of Singapore and Australia. In a three hour long discussion Professor Mannan and members of the team informed the NUS team about the development of Higher Education in Bangladesh under the present government and emphasized the need for establishing a closer academic and administrative relationship amongst the leading universities of the region.
Members of both team agreed that the education provided by the universities must contribute to the development of the nation and make the students more competitive and skillful so that they are able to compete with graduates from home and abroad in the job market.
Professor Tan emphasized that without the autonomy of the universities they cannot function properly. He informed the UGC team that in Singapore government subsidizes seventy five percent of the cost of education while rest comes from the student fees. He also emphasized the need for a stable government to make any progress in the education sector.
Professor Mannan informed that in Bangladesh the government subsidizes up to ninety five percent of university education and also mentioned about the growth of private universities in Bangladesh in recent times.
He said the current government is very education friendly and have brought about a revolution in the education sector but now needs to ensure providing quality education in all sectors of the education.
Professor Tan ensured that NUS will provide all sorts of possible assistance to uplift the quality of education in Bangladesh and explore the idea of exchanging the students and faculty between the two countries. After the meeting the UGC Chairman presented Professor Tan with a crest of the UGC and other gifts on behalf of the UGC team.
