UGC orders public univs to shut evening courses

University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday ordered all public universities to shut their evening courses.
The UGC sent letters in this regard to the Vice-Chancellors of all public universities saying that the courses had tarnished the educational institutions’ image. A UGC press release signed by Dr Shamsul Arefin, Director of Communication and information rights department of UGC said it.
The letter contained 13-point directives also included proper execution of Vice-Chancellors’ responsibilities, taking of UGC’s approval before opening of new department and position, application of university rules at the time of appointing employees, and their promotion,
The UGC issued the letter after President M Abdul Hamid came down heavily

 on the evening courses in public universities, saying that a section of teachers had made universities business institutions.
The President said, “Different public universities are doing businesses by opening many departments, evening courses, diploma courses and institutes.”
Apart from these regular courses, many students are coming out successfully from such ‘business course’ and a section of teachers are getting cash benefit making the university a business institution.
