The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh and British Council Bangladesh have jointly organized a-three day long workshop on ‘Strengthening Teaching and Learning Capacity in the Higher Education Sector of Bangladesh’ under ‘Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)’ at UGC auditorium. UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan was the chief guest at the concluding session on Thursday.
UGC Member Prof Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum, UGC Secretary Dr Md. Khaled, divisional heads and other officials of UGC and representatives from British Council were present on the occasion. Hank Wiliams, UK Consultant and Mark Goodwin, UK Consultant and Faculty from Leicester University conducted workshop.
UGC Chairman, in his speech stressed the need for transforming the human being in to human resources. He observed that expansion of education from primary to tertiary level has taken place in the country. Now we have to maintain quality in education particularly in tertiary level. There are 121 universities (83 private universities) in the country to impart higher education. Sixty three percent students are studying in private universities at present. Enrollment at tertiary level is 3 million, he added.
He also laid emphasis on establishing National Institute for training of university teachers. Directors and Deputy Directors of Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Bangladesh Agricultral, Jahangirnagar, Khulna and BRAC Universities and also Head and QA Specialist of Quality Assurance Unit, UGC took part in the workshop.
