The University Grants Commission (UGC), apex regulatory body of the country’s universities, on Monday directed all the Private Universities in the country to take necessary steps to stop all kinds of obscene and vulgar activities in the name of Rag Day.
The same directives will also be issued to the Public Universities on Tuesday, the UGC sources said.
The Commission served such notice following the High Court order which ordered to stop all sorts of vulgarity, obscenity, nudity, DJ party, indecent behaviour, bullying, and prohibited activities in the name of Rag Day in country’s educational institutions.
The High Court in April 17 directed the authorities concerned to
stop DJ party, bullying, illegal and cruel activities in the name of rag day in all educational institutions.
Against such order of the apex court, the UGC served the notice signed by its Director of the Private University Division Omar Faruque to the private universities to take necessary steps in this regard.
“We want that the private universities will take necessary steps in this regard. Students should follow the norms and values of the society and our culture while observing any programmes,” Omar Faruque told The New Nation.
In the recent time, the Rag Day activities in many educational campuses have drawn bad reputation because of obscenity and vulgarity.
Dhaka University in September 2020 imposed a ban on Rag Day celebration in the campus by terming it ‘unethical and inhuman’ practice.
