Staff Reporter :
The authorities of America Bangladesh University (ABU) have sent a legal notice to the University Grants Commission asking to compensate Tk 200 crore for misbranding the university.
Registrar of the university Md Tajul Islam sent the notice with the sign of Advocate of Supreme Court Ali Asgar on September 10.
The notice asks Chairman of UGC Professor Abdul Mannan, Secretary of the UGC Dr Md Khaled, Additional Director (University Division) Jafar Ahmed Jahangir and Senior Assistant Director Asaduzzaman to pay the claimed money.
In the notice, the ABU administration said, the UGC blamed the university that it involved with certificate business, which is totally false and fabricated.
A five-member team of the UGC visited the administration building of the ABU in city’s Baridhara area instead of its permanent campus on June 5 this year. The team collected 126 certificates from the computers of the university, which were made for the students who passed between 2012 and 2015. And even they did not talk to anyone.
The team submitted a report to the Education Ministry branding that the university has been doing certificate business. It has tarnished the image of the university, the notice reads.
Registrar of ABU Md Tajul Islam told The New Nation on Monday that the UGC submitted a false and fabricated report to the ministry.
“Many groups spread misinformation to tarnish the image of the university. Some of them also did business in the name of the university. The UGC provided misinformation instead of investigating the real fact,” he said.
He said, “We will definitely help the UGC for identifying the culprits. But it should stop such intentional visit.”
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry asked the BTCL and BTRC authorities to remove all the links and addresses of the America Bangladesh University except the address of the main campus in February this year.
In June, the Education Ministry asked the UGC to add the address of the university on its website. But the UGC authorities did not follow the direction of the ministry.
No officials concerned of the UGC agreed to make comment in this regard.
Additional Secretary (Secondary and Higher Education Division) of the Education Ministry Md Belayet Hossain Talukder said, the ABU is being operated with the order of the court. Earlier the ministry had closed the university not for following the rules and regulations of the Private University Act-2010.
“Now it could be misunderstanding between the UGC and the ABU authorities,” he said.
