To mark 81st birth anniversary of Zahir Raihan, one of the brightest starts in the Bangladeshi film industry and also to commemorate his birth anniversary, Udichi organized a film festival titled ‘Zahir Raihan Film Festival’ recently in the capital.
With the slogan titled ‘Camera for resistance’, Udichi orgnaised this festival as a cultural movement to stop militancy and fight against the rapid spread of terrorism.
The festival was inaugurated at the Central Public Library by renowned filmmaker Manjare Hasin Murad. Besides, Udichi’s President Kamal Lohani, Vice President Shankar Saojal, Zahir Raihan’s son Anal Raihan, Shomi Kaisar, daughter of the brother of Zahir Raihan, Shahidullah Kaisar and noted documentary filmmaker Soumitra Dastidar were also present at the daylong festival. The festival began at 10:00am in the morning and continued until 8:00pm. In this festival, the invited guests discussed different steps of film movement and its future; also, they also took part in discussion about the life, works and legacies of Zahir Raihan.
In addition, several internationally acclaimed films and documentaries were screened at this festival. Zahir Raihan’s documentary film ‘Stop Genocide’, Indian filmmaker Soumitra Dastidar’s ‘A Letter to My Daughter’, Tarek Masud’s ‘Runway’, Sentu Ray’s ‘Zahir Raihan’ and Kamar Ahmed Simon’s ‘Shunte Ki Pao’ were screened throughout the day.
A special documentary centering on the several bombings in Bangladesh, starting from the bombings in the Udichi’s 12th national convention in 1999 to the bombings in the Udichi’s Netrokona district office in 2005 was also screened as well. Titled ‘Khwatochinho’, the documentary is created by Udichi’s Central Fine Arts and Film Division. n
