The world’s largest ride-sharing company Uber has started changing its transport system in Dhaka to provide service to 1.5 crore people at an affordable price.
Pradeep Parameswaran, head of central operation of Uber India and South Asia, said this in a press conference at a city hotel on Sunday to mark one year of its journey in Dhaka.
On November 22, 2016, Uber launched “its safe, reliable and affordable on-demand rides at the push of a button in Dhaka”.
Pradeep said, “Dhaka presented us with a challenge of transforming the transportation landscape and creating alternatives to a city burdened with a growing population with cars on its roads.”
In most of the private cars, there is only one passenger, which is a major challenge for the traffic system in Dhaka, he said. Dhaka is the slowest moving traffic in the world with only 15 kilometre per hour, Pradeep pointed out. And it is projected the traffic speed will come down to 5 km per hour by 2020.
He, however, said Uber is trying to tap the unutilized assets. This transport company, he said, is creating more opportunities of livelihood than any other sector.
Head of Uber India and South Asia Amit Jain said the traffic system in Dhaka has not changed for many years.
Besides, he said about 37,000 cars are coming to the streets in Dhaka every year, of which 80 per are private cars. About security in riding Uber, Amit said in the context of Dhaka city, security is a shared responsibility.
Uber has planned to launch an exclusive safety feature that connects to the government control room where ambulances, fire service, police and government agents can be reached in case of emergencies, he said.
Uber got 1.5 million requests in November and over 200,000 people availed their services in the month.
