Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday termed her just-concluded UAE tour very successful in all considerations saying that the visit has created the prospect of opening up the labour market afresh for Bangladeshis in the oil rich country.
“I’ve had constructive talks with the UAE leaders in bilateral, regional and international aspects. Apart from creating possibility of opening up of labour market afresh for Bangladeshis in the UAE, a scope has also been created to work closely by the two countries on other fields,” she said.
The Prime Minister was addressing a crowded press conference on her UAE (United Arab Emirates) tour on October 25-27 at her official residence Ganobhaban in the afternoon.
Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, AL Leader Hasan Mahmud and PM’s Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury were present.
“I firmly believe my visit to the UAE would play a very important role in and make far-reaching contributions towards strengthening the bilateral ties between Bangladesh and the UAE as well as expansion of the Bangladesh labour market there alongside increasing cooperation in other fields,” she said.
During her visit, Hasina said, both the countries agreed to enhance mutual cooperation on trade, investment, higher education, tourism, infrastructure development, culture, energy sector, especially renewable energy, climate change and blue economy. “Through these, the bilateral relations between the two countries have started expanding in newer areas apart from manpower export.”
During the tour, the Prime Minister said, an official
bilateral meeting with Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was held discussing bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interests.
Hasina said she had requested the UAE government to import skilled and semiskilled Bangladeshi workers in different fields, especially for Dubai Expo- 2020.
Stressing that the UAE is the second largest manpower market of Bangladesh, Hasina said she had discussed with the UAE authorities various problems of Bangladeshi workers and they assured her of resolving those.
The two countries agreed to further discuss mobilisation of finance and other supports of the UAE in undertaking different projects in Bangladesh.
They agreed to cooperate in boosting trade and investment, increasing cooperation in the fields of education, infrastructure development, renewable energy and construction of a deep seaport at Paira, Patuakhali and a 150-kilometer marine driveway from Mirsarai in Chittagong to Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar, she said.
She said the UAE side expressed their eagerness to invest in various sectors of Bangladesh, including agriculture, infrastructure development, tourism and energy for the mutual benefits of the two nations.
Hasina said the UAE would recruit 1,000 female workers in 14 different trades initially under a memorandum of understanding signed between the Amala group of UAE and BMET of Bangladesh and the number would be increased gradually.
She said the UAE Prime Minister lauded Bangladesh’s stance on constructing the Padma Bridge with its own finance saying such a move is a sign of progress and development of the country.
The Prime Minister mentioned that both sides discussed the situations in the Middle East and underscored the need for maintenance of peace and stability for sustainable development of the region.
In this connection, Bangladesh and the UAE leaderships expressed deep concern over the growing phenomenon of terrorism and militancy and stressed the importance of combating it closely, she added.
Hasina said in the Joint Statement first of its kind between the two countries, the two sides acknowledged with deep reverence the contributions of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Father of the Nation of Bangladesh and late President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding Father of the UAE, for laying the foundation of the existing excellent relationship between the two countries.
After the bilateral official talks, Sheikh Hasina said, three agreements were signed between Bangladesh and the UAE in presence of the two Prime Ministers.
The agreements are Agreement on Security Cooperation, Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons (TSP) and Agreement on Allotment of a Plot for the UAE Embassy in Dhaka.
Hasina said the UAE government would appoint a Labour Attaché at its embassy in Dhaka from the beginning of next year to simplify the process of manpower recruitment from Bangladesh.
